«El hombre fue al hospital». Even if you missed all the other words in that sentence, you probably caught the word “hospital.” In Spanish, “hospital” also starts with “H,” which is called «la hache». «La hache» is an important Spanish letter, but like a hospital, often sits there silently until you notice it in passing or need it. This is because the Spanish “H” makes little or only a very subtle sound but, as a common letter, is an important part of Spanish orthography (i.e., spelling), just like a hospital is an important part of a community. This free Spanish Letter H worksheet offers practice with letter formation and key vocabulary.

The “official” name of the Spanish “H” is «la hache». It is generally pronounced “ah-cheh,” «hache» or «ha-che». As in most languages, the exact sound varies by location and dialect.

However, since phonetic alphabets differ wildly or are difficult to understand, the easiest way to learn to pronounce «la hache» is to hear it over and over and to practice. Try one of these two videos to hear and practice the sound.
